Executive Summary

SilverRail Technologies is building the digital infrastructure for global rail. As part of that mission, SilverRail set out to migrate its Nordic branch and merge it with its global organization onto a single primary platform — Amazon Web Services.

SilverRail engaged Opsio, an AWS Migration & Modernization Competency partner, to plan and execute the migration. The engagement applied Opsio's three-phase migration methodology — Assessment, Mobilize, Migrate — with AWS guidance throughout, giving SilverRail the benefit of a direct triangular relationship between themselves, Opsio, and AWS.

The partnership addressed six specific pain points in SilverRail's legacy setup (detailed in the Challenges section) and delivered a unified AWS platform designed for agility, scalability, security, and operational excellence.

Challenges

Before embarking on their transition to drive centralization of their mission-critical workloads in AWS, SilverRail encountered several headaches with their previous platform setup.

Fixed Costs

The previous infrastructure had fixed, predictable costs due to bulk purchasing, limiting cost optimization opportunities.

Slow Provisioning

Acquiring new resources was time-consuming and reliant on agreed SLAs, hampering ability to quickly scale to meet fluctuating demands.

Feature Release Cycle

The rollout of new features was dependent on service providers' timelines, limiting ability to respond promptly to market demands.

Limited Automation

The previous infrastructure lacked CLI capabilities for service management, increasing manual effort and reducing operational efficiency.

IT Labor Costs

Annual IT labor costs were substantial — covering application operations, contractors, and service desk, emphasizing need for more efficient solutions.

Legacy Architecture

Parts of the previous architecture carried legacy structures not suitable to support security and performance in a cloud-native setup.

Solution

01

Assessment

  • Conducted comprehensive infrastructure & needs analysis with SilverRail's architects
  • Identified key pain points and set target architecture in AWS
  • Built business case with ROI calculations, risk/feasibility report, and project costs
  • Formulated strategic roadmap for all subsequent phases
02

Mobilize

  • Performed pilot phase with test-migration of identified workloads
  • Optimized migration process and adjusted AWS services based on testing
  • Leveraged AWS scalability and security features for global expansion readiness
  • Addressed latency issues and streamlined batch processing
03

Migrate

  • Revamped application configuration for cloud readiness with contemporary networking architecture
  • Strategically positioned databases and batch job servers to reduce latency
  • Utilized flexible AWS pricing and automatic scheduling for cost optimization
  • Smooth data migration with native PostgreSQL tools and meticulous cutover plan
  • Implemented AWS Control Tower, Systems Manager, and Patch Manager for security & automation
  • Executed cutovers with tight service windows for minimal customer impact

Results

The migration moved SilverRail's Nordic workloads onto AWS and aligned them with the global organization on a single primary platform. Each of the six pain points identified in the pre-migration assessment was addressed by a specific element of the delivered AWS solution:

Before

Fixed costs from bulk purchasing

After

Flexible AWS pricing and automatic scheduling for cost optimization

Before

Slow provisioning tied to provider SLAs

After

On-demand AWS provisioning through Systems Manager and native tooling

Before

Release cadence dependent on provider timelines

After

Release cycle owned by SilverRail on cloud-native infrastructure

Before

Limited automation — no CLI for service management

After

AWS Systems Manager and Patch Manager for automated operations

Before

Substantial IT labor for application ops, contractors, and service desk

After

Operational heavy lifting shifted to AWS managed services and Opsio's Migration & Modernization methodology

Before

Legacy architecture unsuited to cloud-native security and performance

After

Application configuration revamped with contemporary networking, AWS Control Tower governance, and strategically positioned databases and batch job servers for reduced latency

Data migration was executed with native PostgreSQL tools and tight cutover windows to minimize customer impact. AWS Control Tower, Systems Manager, and Patch Manager were deployed for ongoing security and automation, providing the governance foundation SilverRail needs as the platform continues to evolve.
