Oracle managed cloud services are arrangements in which Oracle, or an independent provider, runs your Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) workloads for you: provisioning, 24/7 monitoring, patching, backups, database administration and access control. Oracle sells its own version through Oracle Customer Success Services. Third-party MSPs offer similar scope, often across several clouds.
Key takeaways
- Oracle delivers managed services through Oracle Customer Success Services (CSS), with offerings for OCI infrastructure, Exadata and other databases, integration, analytics and security.
- Turning on an OCI service does not remove admin work. Oracle states that many daily tasks, such as guest VMs, operating systems and database-layer work, stay with the customer unless you buy a managed service.
- Oracle publishes no list prices for these services. Its own data sheet says CSS can often be a 25–30% lower-cost option than doing the work in-house; treat that as a vendor claim and build your own baseline.
- Autonomous AI Database automates patching and backups, which removes much DBA work but not application, identity or cost management.
- Oracle workloads can also run on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. There, Oracle's cloud licensing policy counts two vCPUs as one processor licence when multithreading is enabled.
What are Oracle managed cloud services?
They are services where someone else takes over the operational work of your Oracle cloud estate under an SLA. The phrase is used in two ways:
- Oracle's own managed services. Oracle now sells these as part of Oracle Customer Success Services "run and operate" services for OCI and Autonomous Database. Oracle staff operate the environment alongside Oracle Support and Development.
- Third-party managed services for Oracle workloads. An independent MSP operates OCI, or Oracle databases and applications on another cloud, often as part of a wider multi-cloud contract.
Either way, the reason to buy is the same. Oracle's OCI security documentation describes security as a shared responsibility between you and Oracle, and the same applies to operations: Oracle runs the cloud, you run what you put in it.
What do Oracle's managed services include?
Oracle's data sheet Managed Services: Enabling the Oracle Cloud (version 2.1, 2024) lists the main offerings. In summary:
| Offering | For | What Oracle takes over |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle Managed IaaS Service | OCI compute | 24/7 lifecycle management of guest VMs and their operating systems: provisioning, patching, backups, maintenance and access control |
| Oracle Managed Exadata Database Cloud Service | Exadata on OCI or Cloud@Customer | Provisioning, monitoring, patching, database user administration and periodic service reviews |
| Oracle Managed Database as a Service | Non-Exadata, non-Autonomous database cloud services | Provisioning, monitoring, patching, access control and service reviews |
| Oracle Managed Integration Cloud Service | Oracle Integration | Requirements analysis, provisioning and configuration, daily administration |
| Oracle Managed Analytics Cloud Service | Oracle Analytics Cloud | Provisioning and configuration, daily administration, improvement reviews |
| Security services | Infrastructure, databases, identity | Vulnerability scans and penetration tests, database security (encryption, Database Vault, Audit Vault, data masking), identity and access management |
Oracle says all these offerings are ITIL-based, backed by an SLA and come with a designated Technical Account Manager. The same data sheet states that CSS has more than 4,000 technical engineers supporting over 6,000 customers.
For hybrid estates, Oracle also lists Oracle Advanced Management for Hybrid Cloud, in which Oracle jointly manages applications, databases and infrastructure. According to Oracle, it includes 24/7 monitoring and incident management, proactive patching, backup and restore, and annual disaster recovery testing.
How the service works in practice
Expect a standard managed-service lifecycle:
- Assessment. Inventory of OCI tenancies, databases, middleware and applications; agreed scope and responsibility matrix.
- Onboarding. Access set-up, monitoring agents, backup policies, runbooks and escalation contacts.
- Run. 24/7 monitoring, incident and problem management, patching windows, change requests, capacity reviews.
- Review. Periodic service reviews with SLA results, risks, patch status and an improvement backlog.
The quality of a managed service shows in the details: who approves changes, how patch windows are agreed, how fast a P1 is answered at night and what the monthly report contains. Get those in writing.
Managed service or Autonomous AI Database?
If most of your operational load is database administration, Oracle's own automation may cover a large part of it. Oracle describes Autonomous AI Database as a fully automated Oracle database with frequent, automatic patching without downtime, fully automated backups and auditing that is always enabled.
That removes much routine DBA work. It does not remove schema and query design, application releases, identity and network configuration, cost governance or incident handling across the rest of the stack. Many teams combine an automated database service with a smaller managed scope for everything around it.
Benefits and trade-offs
| Benefit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|
| Access to deep Oracle skills (Exadata, RAC, Data Guard, middleware) without hiring them | Skills sit with the provider; make documentation and knowledge transfer contract items |
| 24/7 coverage under an SLA | Check which tasks are covered 24/7 and which only in business hours |
| Predictable monthly cost | Changes outside the agreed quota are billed separately |
| Patching and security baselines applied consistently | Patch windows must fit your release cycles and peak periods |
| One contract with the vendor (if you use Oracle CSS) | Less bargaining power across clouds; a third-party MSP may cover AWS or Azure too |
How much do Oracle managed cloud services cost?
Oracle does not publish list prices for its managed services; they are quoted per scope. In its data sheet, Oracle says CSS can often be a 25–30% lower-cost option than in-house. That is Oracle's figure, not an independent benchmark, so compare it with your own numbers.
The main cost drivers are:
- Number and size of databases, and whether they run on Exadata, Base Database Service or Autonomous.
- Number of guest VMs and operating systems in scope.
- Middleware, integration and analytics services included.
- Coverage hours, response targets and the number of change requests per month.
- Security services, such as penetration tests or Database Vault management.
- Disaster recovery design and how often failover is tested.
To build a fair comparison, add up today's cost of DBA and system administrator time (including on-call), tooling, training and incidents, then ask each provider to quote the same scope.
Oracle workloads on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
You do not have to run Oracle databases on OCI to get them managed. Common options:
- Oracle AI Database@Azure, @AWS and @Google Cloud. Oracle's multicloud offerings run Oracle database services inside the other providers' datacentres.
- Amazon RDS for Oracle. AWS runs provisioning, backups, patching, monitoring and scaling, with License Included or bring-your-own-licence options.
- Self-managed on VMs, operated by your team or an MSP.
Licensing is the part to check first. Oracle's policy for licensing Oracle software in authorized cloud environments (AWS, Azure and Google Cloud) counts two vCPUs as one Oracle processor licence when multithreading is enabled. Standard Edition 2 may only be licensed on instances of up to eight vCPUs. Get your licence manager involved before choosing instance sizes.
Some teams also use a migration to leave Oracle Database altogether, for example by moving to PostgreSQL. That is a bigger project with application changes, but it removes licence constraints. If you are still deciding on a platform, our guide to Oracle cloud consulting services covers how to pick an adviser, and our cloud migration services cover the move itself.
Who should use Oracle managed services?
- Enterprises with large Oracle estates (E-Business Suite, Exadata, RAC) where specialist skills are scarce and outages are expensive.
- Mid-sized companies without a dedicated Oracle DBA team who still depend on Oracle databases for core systems.
- Organisations moving to OCI that want operations in place from day one rather than after the first incident.
- Regulated organisations that need documented patching, access control and DR tests for audits, for example under NIS2 in the EU or RBI guidance in India.
Teams that already run a skilled 24/7 Oracle operation, or that are about to replace Oracle, gain less.
Oracle support lifecycle and patching
Patching and upgrades are where managed services save the most effort, and where timing matters. Under Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy, Premier Support for Oracle Database, Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications runs for five years from general availability, followed by Extended and Sustaining Support stages. A provider should keep a lifecycle calendar for every version you run and plan upgrades before Premier Support ends.
Checklist for choosing a provider
- Written scope per layer: OCI infrastructure, OS, database, middleware, applications.
- Coverage hours and response times per priority, with service credits.
- Named Oracle skills: Exadata, RAC, Data Guard, GoldenGate, E-Business Suite if relevant.
- Patch policy and lifecycle calendar.
- Backup, restore-test and DR-test schedule with evidence.
- Security controls for provider access and logging of privileged actions.
- Data protection terms: GDPR Article 28 DPA for EU data, DPDP Act terms for Indian personal data.
- Licensing advice that is independent of the services sold.
- Exit plan with documentation and access hand-back.

Frequently asked questions
What is Oracle Managed Cloud Services?
It is the managed operation of Oracle cloud workloads, today sold by Oracle as part of Customer Success Services. Oracle staff take over tasks such as VM and OS management, database patching and monitoring under an SLA. Independent MSPs offer comparable services.
How is it different from an Oracle Cloud subscription?
A subscription gives you the cloud service. Oracle states that many daily administration tasks remain with the customer after a service is activated. A managed service hands those tasks to Oracle or a partner.
What does Oracle's managed service include?
According to Oracle, offerings cover managed IaaS (guest VMs and OS), managed Exadata and database services, managed integration and analytics services, and security services, all ITIL-based, SLA-backed and with a Technical Account Manager.
How much does Oracle cloud managed services cost?
There is no public price list; quotes depend on databases, VMs, coverage and services in scope. Oracle claims its managed services can often cost 25–30% less than an in-house team.
Can a third-party MSP manage Oracle Cloud?
Yes. Independent providers can operate OCI tenancies and Oracle databases on OCI, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Check their Oracle skills, licensing knowledge and access controls.
Is Autonomous AI Database a managed service?
Autonomous AI Database automates patching, backups and tuning, so it is a highly automated database service. It does not manage your applications, identities, network or cost, which is why many teams still use a managed service around it.
