Migration of a global SaaS recruitment platform to AWS

WorkBuster reached out to Opsio as an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner, wishing to lean on our experience migrating mission-critical workloads into the AWS cloud.

They wanted to take advantage of high security standards, flexible and highly available services, and frameworks such as the AWS Well-Architected Framework — ensuring continued success of their software platform and business.

With WorkBuster's software platform being used widely around the world, a near-zero downtime approach was absolutely critical. The data — held in a MySQL instance inside a VMware hypervisor — needed to be migrated with as little disruption as possible.

Opsio designs solutions with consistency and repeatability in mind. The WorkBuster solution was deployed using AWS CloudFormation templates — meaning infrastructure design can be versioned and managed like any other piece of software code.

This fits nicely with DevOps principles, since changes can be managed, tracked, and deployed quickly. The infrastructure was developed iteratively, allowing WorkBuster's platform to benefit from new cloud opportunities.

Architecture

• AWS Route53 for DNS resolution to an Application Load Balancer
• SSL offload handled by the load balancer for reduced backend load
• EC2 instances backed by multi-AZ, highly available MySQL RDS
• Auto-scaling group for limitless horizontal scaling and elasticity
• Encryption in transit (ALB) and at rest (RDS storage encryption)
• CloudWatch dashboards and alarms for operational excellence

The AWS Application Load Balancer provides infinite scalability. Behind it, EC2 instances backed by multi-AZ MySQL RDS provide high availability. The auto-scaling group enables limitless horizontal scaling and elasticity.

Adherence to the Well-Architected Framework's security best practices ensures strong security — encryption in transit via the ALB and encryption at rest on RDS storage. Operational excellence is achieved through CloudWatch monitoring.
