The Challenge
Ski resorts are inherently seasonal — during the December to April window, the vast majority of Branasgruppen's trade is made. Their outgoing IT infrastructure was based on VMWare's ESXi solution, hosted on-premises.
This meant 5 months of extremely high traffic to the group's websites, including webcam images from the slopes. These resources are heavily relied upon and need to be reliable.
Scaling of web front-ends, middleware, and back-end databases needed to be done manually, and in response to demand. Before a scaling event, performance would drop below the high standards set by the business.
Deploying new software to the fragmented virtual server estate required bringing the whole environment down. A new solution to the problem of flexibility was needed.
The Solution
Backup & Recovery
All production systems backed up daily for incremental data, weekly for full backups with 60 days retention. AWS native tools like snapshots and RDS backup features provide a comprehensive backup strategy.
EBS volumes are backed up to Amazon S3 using incremental snapshots — minimizing time and storage costs. Application code and configurations rely on AWS CodeCommit and CloudFormation templates for additional redundancy.
Cloud Architecture
The solution leveraged AWS auto-scaling, multi-AZ deployment, and managed database services to handle the extreme seasonal traffic patterns without manual intervention.

Their ski packages are renowned for quality and reliability, meaning their online presence has to match their corporate image. Over the years, Branas had grown tremendously, requiring extensive IT infrastructure to support their vast range of skiing services.
